The Doll House

1 Hunters and Gatherers

What should one expect from a private dinner invitation? A lot, perhaps – but certainly not this.

The dinner was arranged through a mutual friend who insisted that I had to see this man’s house. A week later, following a gracious invitation, we were welcomed with a warm handshake at his home.

We cooked tempura: a spread of fried vegetables and fish.

2 The House

As my friend had mentioned beforehand, the man had married a sex doll. It soon became clear that she was not alone. He was an avid collector.

The dolls were arranged throughout the house with deliberate care. Alongside them stood an assortment of peculiar gadgets, all meticulously positioned to recreate scenes from well-known European fairy tales.

3 The Dolls

He had amassed a collection of ten dolls in total. They were manufactured in Japan by a company called Orient Industry. The price of a single doll starts at ¥400,000.

The company previously offered customised dolls, with faces modeled after a provided reference image. This service was later discontinued due to ethical concerns.

Once, the man told me, someone broke into his house at night and stole three of the dolls. Fortunately, the thief did not abduct his wife.
