Background

After several temporary residencies in Barcelona, I was invited by Jörg Esefeld to join a new project in their City Reader series on metropolises around the world. The brief was to photograph the city from my own perspective — a task I embraced with great enthusiasm. After developing a schematic plan, I returned to Barcelona for a month, capturing the city’s heights and depths, its cityscapes and streets.
In the end edition esefeld & traub‘s (Stuttgart) book brought together historical and contemporary images of Barcelona across three distinct periods – 1958, 1972, and 2023 – creating a layered visual narrative of the city’s transformation over time. Complementing the photographs are personal texts by various authors – long-time residents and recurring visitors – reflecting on their relationship with and perception of the city.

While photographing for LAMEBA, a parallel idea began to emerge. As I moved through the city for the commission, I found myself increasingly drawn to its underground spaces – the construction sites and infrastructures shaping Barcelona beneath the surface. This growing focus developed into an independent urban exploration project, later published as BESI, TRES XEMENEIES, BARCELONA in a limited edition of 50 copies. After the edition quickly sold out, I revisited its first chapter – centred on the Linea 9 metro construction and the final moments of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) before it was removed forever– and republished it as a standalone zine CHAPTER ONE BESI.

Both, the photo book LAMEBA and the standalone zine CHAPTER ONE BESI are included in the order above.
